CCD2: Tom Kohler-Cadmore hits ton as Worcestershire frustrate Gloucestershire
Sunday 29 May 2016 20:09, UK
A superb unbeaten century from Tom Kohler-Cadmore helped Worcestershire recover from a slow start to post 341-8 at the end of day of their match against Gloucestershire at New Road.
The hosts made the worst possible start to the match when opener Daryl Mitchell (0) was trapped lbw by David Payne (3-66) off just the third delivery.
Joe Clarke (three) was then caught by Chris Dent off the bowling of Liam Norwell (2-56) to leave the home side struggling on 3-2.
Worcestershire's in form batsman, Brett D'Oliveira, was unable to extend his fine scoring run and made just 10 before becoming Payne's second victim.
And the hosts lost another quick wicket soon after - Alexei Kervezee caught by Dent off Payne after adding just two more runs.
Kohler-Cadmore could only watch on as Ross Whitley was the next to go, clean bowled by Josh Shaw (1-65) for three.
Ben Cox arrived at the crease and steadied the innings with a fine knock of 75 before losing his wicket to Craig Miles (2-80), who then quickly accounted for Joe Leach (four).
Kohler-Cadmore continued to frustrate the Gloucestershire bowlers and was ably assisted by Ed Barnard who reached a quick-fire half century before being trapped by Norwell.
However, Jack Shantry (26 not out) picked up where Barnard had left off to help Kohler-Cadmore reach 152 not out at the close of day one.
Mark Cosgrove reached a well-played century, whilst Mark Pettini fell just short of his own, as Leicestershire frustrated second-place Kent at Canterbury.
Cosgrove made 119 while Pettini was dismissed for 97 as the pair helped the visiting side reach 340-8 at the close of play on day one.
The hosts began the match strongly and soon had Leicestershire struggling on 3-19 after Darren Stevens (3-74) removed both Paul Horton (nine) and Neil Dexter (one), while Matt Coles (2-94) dismissed opener Angus Robson for a duck.
However, a fourth-wicket partnership of 218 between Cosgrove and Pettini swung the momentum back in the away side's favour.
Pettini fell just short of a deserved century after nicking a Joe Denley (1-22) delivery through to Sam Billings behind the stumps.
And, although he reached a century of his own, Cosgrove fell shortly afterwards after being run out by Billings.
Niall O'Brien (31), Ned Eckersley (11) and Ben Raine (18) all made starts before getting out as Leicestershire stretched their lead past the 300 mark.
And Clint McKay (16 not out) and James Sykes (11 not out) both survived the remainder of the day to help Leicestershire take the edge heading into day two.
Ed Joyce and Luke Wells both made tons to help Sussex move into a dominant position against Derbyshire on day two at Hove.
Joyce, who made 250 against the same opponents three weeks ago, made 106, while Wells finished the day unbeaten on 104 as Sussex ended the day on 342-4, following on from Derbyshire's first innings total of 150 all out.
Sussex began their reply in fine fashion and reached 113 for no loss before Chris Nash (65) missed a full toss and was clean bowled by Wayne Madsen (2-65).
Wells and Joyce then added another 135 runs before the former top edged one to Chesney Hughes off the bowling of Madsen.
New Zealand Test batsman Ross Taylor replaced Joyce and smashed 54 off 71 balls before eventually falling to Tom Taylor (2-87).
However, Wells continued to score freely alongside Matt Machan (six), who was caught in the covers off the final ball of the day.
And finally, Jaik Mickleburgh and Nick Browne shared an impressive opening stand of 195 as Essex batted their way back into the match against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.
Mickleburgh made 108, whilst Browne rode his luck to reach 88, to help the away side to 274-2 at the end of the second day, still trailing Northants by 170 runs.
Essex, responding to Northants first innings total of 444, had chalked off almost half of those runs before Richard Gleeson (2-57) finally had Mickleburgh caught by Olly Stone shortly after reaching his century.
Browne, who had already been dropped twice in the slips earlier in his innings, was eventually caught by wicketkeeper David Murphy off of Gleeson.
However, Northampton failed to make any further inroads into Essex's batting line-up and Ravi Bopara (33 not out), also dropped on 17, was able to add another 74 runs to the total alongside Tom Westley (44 not out) before the close of play.
