Yorkshire and Somerset pull off vital victories in Division One

Yorkshire beat Warwickshire by 48 runs at Headingley to move into third place in Division One and stay in the running for a third consecutive Division One title on track.

The Tykes began the day on 78-5 in their second innings, but opener Alex Lees guided them to 150 all out with a courageous knock of 70.

Jeetan Patel (4-49) ran through the tail as Yorkshire set Warwickshire 229 to win, and they bowled the visitors out for 180, Jack Brooks and Ryan Sidebottom doing the initial damage and Adil Rashid's leg-spin too good for the tail.

The quicks reduced the Bears to 14-3, before Jonathan Trott (59) and Tim Ambrose (36) got their team back in it, but when they departed Rashid ripped through the lower order.

Somerset took five wickets in just 22 balls to pull off a stunning victory over Durham and move above them into second place in Division One.

The visitors began the third morning at Taunton on 130-5, needing 46 runs to win the game and keep their own Championship title bid very much on course.

Seventeen minutes later the game was over, left-arm spinner Jack Leach (4-46) first pinning nightwatchman Graham Onions in front for a duck with the fifth ball of the morning.

With the very next ball the dangerous Paul Coghlin steered to Jim Allenby and in Leach's next over keeper Stuart Poynter (12) was trapped lbw.

Leach's fellow spinner Roelof van der Merwe then removed Mark Wood and Chris Rushworth with consecutive balls to win it.

Surrey are in a commanding position against Middlesex, with Sam Curran impressing with bat and ball at a sun-drenched Lord's.

The teenage all-rounder took four wickets in the morning session, then scored an unbeaten half-century in the evening period as Surrey closed 356 ahead with four second innings wickets remaining.

Middlesex began the day on 249-5 in reply to Surrey's 415, and Curren's 13-ball burst of three wickets for four runs helped Surrey take a 122-run first-innings lead.

Middlesex's Toby Roland-Jones hit back, taking three for none in seven balls as the visitors collapsed from 47-0 to 47-4.

The clatter of wickets raised home hopes of being in a position to chase a moderate target as Surrey's lead was then only 169.

But Jason Roy (37) restored the primacy of the bat before Curran (71no) and Ben Foakes (50no) took the game away from Middlesex, adding an unbeaten 126.

It was a long day in the field for Hampshire at Southampton as they took just three wickets on day three against Lancashire.

Resuming on 70-1 in reply to the hosts' 548-6, Lancashire reached 310-4 at stumps, 238 behind and barring a dramatic collapse the game looks destined for a draw.

Alviro Petersen missed out on his 42nd first-class century by two runs and Haseeb Hameed (89) and Luke Procter (54) also made hay on a flat Ageas Bowl deck.
