Liverpool hold talks with Schmadtke over sporting director role

Liverpool have held talks with Jorg Schmadtke about becoming their next sporting director.

Schmadtke was a goalkeeper during his playing days before moving into football administration and recently held the title of Managing Director Sport at Bundesliga club Wolfsburg for five years before leaving at the start of February.

Liverpool's current sporting director Julian Ward, 41, leaves his position at the end of the season having told the club he wanted to step down last November after more than a decade at Anfield, just months after officially replacing the hugely successful Michael Edwards in the role.

Liverpool to be 'smart' this summer with two new midfielders on the shopping list

Jurgen Klopp has vowed that Liverpool will recruit 'smartly' this summer.

"You have to bring in the right players and build a new team," the Liverpool boss told Sky Sports. "This team had a sensational story, now we write a new story."

Liverpool will be active in this summer's window as they look to overhaul their squad and are targeting at least two new midfielders.

Brighton want more than £70m each for Caicedo and Mac Allister

Brighton will expect offers well in excess of the £70m turned down for Moises Caicedo in January to sanction his exit and that of Alexis Mac Allister this summer.

Caicedo has also featured on the wishlists of Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, although the latter have been positively pitching to Mac Allister's camp. The Argentina international is high on Jurgen Klopp's shortlist of targets.

Liverpool are seeking up to three new midfielders and have received encouragement over Mac Allister's willingness to switch to Anfield. Much will be determined by the overall cost of a package to sign him and is it understood that the player's father is still listening to all proposals at present.
