Harry Whittington has earmarked the Betfred Eider Chase at Newcastle on February 24 as potential next port of call for Vinnie Lewis.

The Sparsholt handler is considering a tilt at the extended four-mile prize for the seven-year-old following his victory in the Sussex National at Plumpton on Sunday.

Whittington said: "We found a lot out from his Sedgefield run in that he likes those staying trips on that really soft ground.

"We just had to hope he improved again and he certainly did. He seems to be thriving at the moment.

"I am not sure what to do next but the Eider Chase has been muttered. It is at the end of February so we might give him a nice break and freshen him up for that."

Whittington hopes Vinnie Lewis can continue on an upward curve and develop into a contender for next season's Welsh Grand National.

He added: "I think he would have gone another circuit around Plumpton and these staying races are tailor made for him.
