The rest of the news from Newmarket, where Gifted Master claimed a major payday in the £500,000 Tattersalls Millions Trophy.

The Hugo Palmer-trained Gifted Master (9/2) made most of the running as he romped to victory in the £500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2yo Trophy.

Pat Smullen had the Kodiac gelding quickly out of the stalls to grab the far rail and take an early lead. It was pretty straightforward from then on as Gifted Master went clear at the business end to win unchallenged by four and a half lengths from the O'Brien-trained 11/4 favourite Waterloo Bridge. Zhui Feng finished half a length away in third.

Palmer said: "It was a very good performance and we've always thought he was a good horse.

"We thought he was a Coventry horse and he just got beat by Buratino before then. He's a lovely horse to have in the yard.

"If he's okay I'd like to run him again this year, but he picked up an injury after he won at Newcastle which was why he was off the track for so long, so I just hope he's in one piece tomorrow morning."If he is then maybe we'll go for the Horris Hill."

Poet's Prize had scooped the first big pool on offer at Newmarket as he ran out a cosy winner of the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes.

David Barron's colt was never far off the pace set by Cherry Kool and Comedy Night before going all out for success in the final quarter-mile.

Responding well to jockey Graham Gibbons' urgings, Poet's Prize (7/1) asserted in the closing stages to take the £81,165 first prize by half a length from Receding Waves, with favourite Twin Sails the same distance away third.

Winning owner Laurence O'Kane said: "It was a fantastic performance and a great ride by Graham. We've done it again. Last year me and David picked up a big prize in Ireland.

"This horse has been progressing slowly and has been one of those slow burners. He's a proper horse and he will step up. Graham said he was going away from them in the last 100 yards."

Supporters of the odds-on Alice Springs had few anxious moments as Aidan O'Brien's filly outclassed the opposition in the £300,000 Tattersalls Millions 2yo Fillies' Trophy.

Sent off the 2/5 favourite (having opened at 4/7) after finishing fourth in the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes just a week earlier, the daughter of Galileo duly landed the odds with the minimum of fuss.

Ryan Moore had her tucked in just behind the leaders before coming through to lead just inside the final furlong.

Appreciating the extra furlong a week on, Alice Springs went on to score by four lengths from compatriot Clear Skies, trained by David Wachman. Ninetta was a length and a half away third.

Moore said: "She won very easily. She's backed up quickly from last week. She was fourth in the Cheveley Park and third in the Moyglare.

"She's a very good filly and won nicely. She's by Galileo, I'm sure she'll get a bit further if needed."
