Slight setback rules O'Brien ace out of Breeders' Cup

Triple Group 1 winner Rip Van Winkle has been retired to stud. Trainer Aidan O'Brien told the Racing Post that he had suffered a slight setback and would miss the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs - he will now stand as a sire at Coolmore Stud in Ireland. O'Brien said: "He has had a very slight setback and while it was very minor, it would have meant forcing him to get him to Churchill Downs. So the decision has been made to retire him. "Everyone knows how good I though he was. His big thing was his incredible speed." Fourth in the 2009 Derby at Epsom, his Group 1 wins came in the Sussex Stakes and QEII Stakes the same year over a mile and then he landed this year's Juddmonte International at York over 10 furlongs.
