Improving stable star still on course for Gold Cup bid

Neil Mulholland reports his totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup hope Midnight Chase to be well on target for the March showpiece. The Devon trainer watched the William Hill King George VI Chase with interest at the weekend and will keep a keen eye on the significant races ahead of the blue riband in two months' time. However, Midnight Chase is his chief concern and the 20-1 shot is a lively outsider on the evidence of his performances at Cheltenham where he has recorded four victories, three of them this season. "We're happy with him, he looks superb and is very well in his coat. He looks great," said Mulholland. "He's not doing anything spectacular. He's just chipping away and fingers crossed he'll be 100% on the day. "The race is eight weeks away. He's cantering away every day, but he's not doing any fast work. He's a workmanlike horse and he enjoys it. "We're going to learn more about some of the Gold Cup horses and plenty can happen between now and then. "The King George was a great race and the Gold Cup is not going to be easy. The race I'm looking forward to seeing before then is the Hennessy at Leopardstown. That will tell a few stories too. "We will be going there hoping we can finish in the places and anything else would be a bonus. He's entitled to go there and run well."
