An inspirational and entrepreneurial force

John Halewood, owner of Grand National winner Amberleigh House, has died aged 64. As well as being a leading owner, Halewood was hailed in the business world as a "visionary entrepreneur" for transforming brands such as Lambrini and Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer into household names. Halewood, who was the chief executive and majority shareholder of drinks manufacturer and distributor Halewood International, is understood to have died in his sleep at his Cheshire home on Saturday. Andy Smallman, the company's managing director, said: "At this time all our thoughts are with his family and friends to whom we have sent our heartfelt condolences. "For over 30 years John was the inspirational and entrepreneurial force behind the Halewood International group. "I am sure that I speak for all of his colleagues when I say that he will be greatly missed." Halewood had horses with the late Ginger McCain and was among those to pay tribute when the legendary trainer passed away last month. Amberleigh House gave Halewood his National victory in 2004 after finishing third the previous year. Halewood still has horses with McCain's trainer son Donald as well as having a number of runners with Cheshire trainer Lisa Williamson.
