Beaten Up was an impressive winner of the Group Three Worthington's Champion Shield Stakes (registered as the St Simon Stakes) at Newbury on Saturday. William Haggas' three-year-old was having just his third career start and was stepped up in class after hacking up in a handicap off a mark of 85 last time. Sent off at 7-2, Johnny Murtagh always looked confident aboard the half-brother to Harris Tweed who responded well to his urgings in the closing stages to win by four-and-a-half lengths. Al Kazeem (5-2 favourite) was best of the rest in second. "I'm thrilled to bits with him," said Haggas. "Of course it's nice that my father bred him, but the main thing is that we have nice horses in the yard. "It was a huge step up for him having won a conditions race, but on his homework we thought he had a chance. "The favourite was second and god knows what the handicapper will rate us. I think handicaps are out! "I've no idea what we'll do with him now. He won't run in England again this year and I doubt he'll run anywhere. "He might go to Dubai or something like that, but we'll regroup and see. We'll enjoy this victory."
