French raider storms home as Godolphin are out of luck

Chinchon made amends for his narrow defeat 12 months ago when storming to victory in the Singapore Airlines International Cup at Kranji. The French-trained entire was a close-up fifth to Gitano Hernando last year but landed the spoils in great style this time in the hands of Olivier Doleuze. Flax made a brave attempt to make all the running and still held every chance in the straight but Chinchon, trained by Carlos Laffon-Parias, came with a decisive rattle. Leading a furlong out, he pulled three lengths clear of Hong Kong challenger Zaidan with Flax hanging on for third and Zazou fourth. There was more disappointment for Godolphin as their intended runner City Style was withdrawn at the start. The Mahmood Al Zarooni-trained six-year-old played up in the stalls and was found to have knocked a leg.

Handy Excuses

Doleuze said: "I can't believe it, I'm still up in the air. I'll come down to earth in a day or so. It means an awful lot to me to win this race in Singapore. "I was one of the early ones to come out of Europe to ride here, which makes this special. "I had a good trip and he improved his position when I asked him, and he finished really well." Favourite Zazou was handy throughout but came back with excuses, in fourth, under Andreas Suborics who said: "He ran a very good race, but he's not had much luck in running." Gerald Mosse said of the Rod Collet-trained Dream Peace: "We were having a lovely run but after coming wide round the home turn he was squeezed and lost around five lengths."
