Roger Varian's Shimmering Surf was a gallant second in the Group Two Prix de Pomone at Deauville on Saturday. Neil Callan set out to make all the running aboard the British raider and had most of the field at full stretch a furlong out. However Andre Fabre's La Pomme D'Amour, wearing the familiar silks of Guy Reed, had her covered and showed a smart turn of foot to surge clear and score well under Maxime Guyon. Shimmering Surf held on for the forecast spot ahead of the Aga Khan's Dalkaka.
