Derwin fortunate in Abbot fall

Conditional jockey Gary Derwin appeared to have escaped serious injury after taking a nasty fall at Newton Abbot.
Derwin was partnering the Mark Gillard-trained No No Cardinal in the Follow NewtonAbbotRace On Twitter Handicap Chase when he came to grief at the final fence and looked to get a kick on the head from the oncoming Islandmagee, who unseated his rider Conor Ring.
Derwin remained on the track for some time and was taken to Torbay Hospital, but Gillard was hopeful he had suffered relatively minor injuries.
Gillard said: "He isn't concussed and appeared compos mentis, but he has been very lucky as his hat (helmet) took a real beating and had virtually caved in.
"Gary looks to have a potential collarbone injury, he may have also damaged his hand and he has a cut on his head.
"He's been taken to Torbay for reassessment and he's been given some morphine, but hopefully he's all right."
