Weatherbys Chris Hill rounds up the recent bloodstock news as Shamardal gained a Group One success thanks to Mukhadram.
Mukhadram (Shamardal) gained a deserved Group One success with victory in Saturday’s Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park under Paul Hanagan, having finished an unlucky third for owner Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum in last year’s renewal.
Bought by Shadwell for 190,000 guineas at the 2009 Tattersalls December Foals Sale, the Willie Haggas-trained five year-old, runner-up in the Dubai World Cup in March and in last year’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes, is a half-brother to John Gosden’s Group Three Musidora Stakes third Woodland Aria (Singspiel) and the twelve furlong winner Entihaa (Tiger Hill) out of the once-raced mare Magic Tree (Timber Country).
Magic Tree, who cost just 2,800 guineas when purchased by David Loder at the 2005 Doncaster Lincoln Mixed Sale, is a half-sister to the Godolphin-trained pair of Mastery (Sulamani), winner of the 2009 St Leger and 2010 Hong Kong Vase, and Kirklees (Jade Robbery) who landed four black-type races for the operation having won the 2006 Gran Criterium at Milan as a juvenile when trained by Mark Johnston.
For his sire Shamardal, the victory of Mukhadram brought the 2004 Champion European Two Year-Old and 2005 Champion European Three Year-Old Miler’s tally of individual Group One winners to eleven, with other notable performers for Darley’s four-time Group One winning stallion being the dual French Classic winner Lope de Vega and the 2010 Racing Post Trophy winner Casamento.
The Markus Klug-trained Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars) extended his unbeaten record in some style when turning Sunday’s Deutsches Derby (German Derby) into a route under Christophe Soumillon.
From the first crop of seven time Group One winner Sea The Stars, Sea The Moon was bought back by owner/breeders Gestüt Görlsdorf for 230,000 guineas at the 2012 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and becomes the second Classic winner sired by the 2009 Champion European Three Year-Old following Taghrooda, who was similarly impressive when landing the Oaks for John Gosden in June.
Out of Sanwa (Monsun), an unraced full sister to two previous winners of the German Classic in the 2006 victor and five-time Group One winner, Schiaparelli (Monsun) and the 2000 hero and dual German Group One winner Samum (Monsun), as well as the 2002 Deutsches Stuten Derby (German Oaks) winner Salve Regina (Monsun), Sea The Moon is a half-brother to Sansiwa (Dansili), a two-time winner in France and runner-up in the Listed Dallmayr Coupe Lukull.
In addition, Sanwa foaled a full sister to Sea The Moon in 2013 who was purchased at last year’s Tattersalls December Foals Sale by Sunderland Holdings for 320,000 guineas and has subsequently been named Sea The Sun and the further family contains a couple more European Group One winners in Seismos and Sortilege who are out of siblings to Sanwa.
In Saturday’s Group Two Lancashire Oaks, the John Gosden-trained Pomology (Arch) extended her unbeaten record to four with a convincing victory over stablemate Sultanina (New Approach) and the Princess Haya-owned four year-old filly looks capable of adding to the number of domestic Group Ones won by offspring of her sire, the 1998 Super Derby winner, which currently stands at two courtesy of the two top level sprints won by Les Arcs (Arch) in 2006.
One of four winners out of the four-time winner and Listed Penn National Distaff Handicap winner Sharp Apple (Diesis), Pomology was bought by Gosden for $250,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Sale in 2011 and is a half-sister to the U.S. three-time winner and dual Stakes placed Sharbat (Dynaformer).
In breeding news, it has been confirmed that the four-time Grade One winning hurdler and record breaking mare Quevega (Robin des Champs) has been confirmed in foal to Beat Hollow, himself a four-time Grade/Group One winner and sire of top class winners under both codes, notably last year’s Doomben Cup winner Beaten Up and the 2012 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner Cinders And Ashes.
Last month’s Diamond Jubilee Stakes winner Slade Power (Dutch Art) has been purchased by Darley to stand the 2015 season at their Kildangan Stud in Ireland. The Eddie Lynam-trained five year-old will continue to race in the colours of Mrs Sabena Power, for whom he completed a Royal Ascot Group One sprint double after stablemate Sole Power landed the King’s Stand Stakes, for the remainder of the season and will bid to add to his Group One tally in Saturday’s July Cup at Newmarket.
Finally, sad news came out of Darley that Lammtarra, the 1995 Derby and Arc hero died last week at the age of twenty three. Retired from racing unbeaten following his Arc victory, Lammtarra stood at both Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket and at Arrow Stud in Japan before Sheikh Mohammed bought him back to Britain where he lived out his days in retirement from stud duties back at Dalham Hall.
Though he failed to sire a top class performer in his own right, his mating with the 1993 Arc winner Urban Sea and subsequent great broodmare Urban Sea (Miswaki) resulted in the Listed winner Melikah , herself the dam of Group Two winner Masterstroke (Monsun) and Villarrica (Selkirk), the dam of the Group Two winning pair Vancouverite and Khawlah.
