Basateen has been forced to miss Saturday's Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket with a minor injury.

The highly-regarded Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned juvenile was a short-priced favourite for the Acomb Stakes at York but could only finish third behind Dutch Connection and Toocoolforschool.

Trainer Richard Hannon said: "He was out in the paddock rolling in the sun and where he'd been pawing at the ground he dug up a little flint and then sat on it and had to have three stitches.

"He's definitely a horse for next year. The Acomb form has worked out as the winner went close in the National Stakes and the runner-up hacked up in the Mill Reef.

"There was a time, and hopefully he still is, that I thought he was one of our best two-year-olds.

"He was just a bit keen in the Acomb and wasn't like himself and finished third. I was disappointed with that but I think the world of him and he'll be very good."

Hannon also took Estidhkaar out of the Royal Lodge, with the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on October 17 his aim.

"Estidhkaar almost certainly goes for the Dewhurst," the Marlborough handler told At The Races.

"He's won his two Group Twos so he deserves his chance in a Group One, he'd have had to carry a penalty in the Royal Lodge.

"They didn't go quick enough for him in the Champagne, otherwise he'd have been more impressive."
