Paul Nolan's Grade One-winning chaser Defy Logic has been ruled out for the season with a tendon injury.

The JP McManus-owned seven-year-old beat Trifolium by three and a half lengths to lift the Racing Post Novice Chase at Leopardstown in December, but did not run again after finishing a well-beaten fifth to that horse in the Frank Ward Solicitors Arkle Novice Chase the following month.

It transpired he had burst a blood vessel during the race and his campaign came to a premature end.

However, he had been back cantering after enjoying his summer break, and hopes were high for a fruitful year ahead.

But Nolan said: "He has a suspensory problem and we've just had to pull the rug on his season. He's gone back to Martinstown (McManus' stud) and with this sort of thing it is normally a season.

"He was perfect, he had come back from Martinstown after the summer looking beautiful, he looked a picture, but unfortunately about a week ago he had a slight swelling at the back of his knee and when we had it scanned it showed a little problem.

"We were really looking forward to the season with him, he had a couple of different options and we were just starting to make a plan, but that's the way it goes."
