Captain Chris pushed to make King George field

Owner Graham Whateley admits Captain Chris faces a race against time to make the William Hill King George at Kempton on Boxing Day.

Whateley and his wife Diana have come close to winning the feature race in recent seasons with Captain Chris, who was third to Kauto Star in 2011 and second to Long Run 12 months later.

He looked better than ever last season with wins at Kempton and in the Ascot Chase, but he was ruled out of the Gold Cup with a suspensory problem and the owners may have to rely on Charlie Hall winner Menorah.

"If the weather holds for us, I would give my right arm to win the King George," Whateley told Racing UK.

"We've been second and third with Captain Chris and we're not ruling Captain Chris out at this present moment in time, but it will be tight for him to get there.

"I wouldn't mind that in a way because I've always thought he was a spring horse.
