Verdict

Papal Bull can put an unlucky run in the Derby behind him to secure victory at the expense of Red Rocks, Youmzain and Tam Lin to name but a few. Sir Michael Stoute has won this contest four times in the past, and from a host of entries, the master of Freemason Lodge relies on Tam Lin and Papal Bull. The latter was successful in the Chester Vase, and then lined up in the Vodafone Derby quietly fancied. However, he lost all chance when badly hampered two out, in the end finishing 10th. He would surely have been a lot closer to Sir Percy but for that mishap, and he has worked well enough since to warrant support here. Stablemate Tam Lin is a progressive sort, but has a lot more to do than when scoring at Hamilton last time, and a much bigger threat to the selection is likely to be Red Rocks who has done nothing wrong so far. The form of his Windsor race has worked out well, and the manner of his Listed success at Newmarket subsequently, suggests that Brian Meehan's charge will have no problem staying 12 furlongs. Youmzain finished third to Dylan Thomas in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial, which puts him in the frame, while the latter's trainer Aidan O'Brien, relies on Leopardstown maiden winner Magicalmysterytour from a total of five entries, so he cannot be ruled out with probable improvement to come. Papal Bull sets the standard though, and is the pick to give Sir Michael Stoute another success in this race.
