In depth

Verdict

Benkei has been here twice and won both times. He was returning from a very long break when well beaten over hurdles at Leopardstown in March but may need another run. PUGIN gave notice of an imminent victory with narrow defeats at Leopardstown and Killarney so it was no surprise to see him make a winning handicap debut at Gowran. He's high enough in the ratings at 91 but looks progressive and can go in again. Great Bear led for most of the way when tackling 1m6f on heavy ground at Killarney and looks certain to take some catching while Bashiyr completed a soft-ground double last September and looked on the way back to form at Sligo, though he's never raced over this trip. Effernock Fizz is now looking well handicapped after her fine run behind Mighty Blue at the Curragh on Saturday.
