Verdict

GOODBYE EARL is worth a shot in this company and gets the nod ahead of Bronze Beau, My Mandy and Glen Shiel. The last named represents the powerful Mark Johnston yard and is likely to attract plenty of interest for that fact alone. Johnston has a real knack of quickly bringing the best out of juveniles and this stoutly-bred colt is sure to have been primed during stringent work at home. However, it's a virtually sure-fire assumption that the colt will be suited by a much sterner test of stamina than he will face over Catterick's flying five furlongs; so he may not represent great value at the likely odds. My Mandy, like the selection, is a trustworthy filly who deserves a change of fortune. Given a 25% strike-rate when riding for Ian Williams, the in-form Eddie Ahern is an interesting jockey booking for My Mandy and a bold attempt ought to be forthcoming. Bronze Beau is also respected and, as he comes here on the back of a solid effort at Hamilton 16 days ago, it will be noteworthy if support arrives for the top weight. Nevertheless, Goodbye Earl takes a significant drop in class today and is the preferred option on this occasion. The Alan Berry-trained filly is versatile regarding the ground and looks a good bet to rise above the challenge today.
