In depth

Verdict

Philip Hobbs has had his hand forced into running here by the BHB's new structure for novice chasers and, while potentially well treated, it is probably safer to side with the proven chasing experience of Un Vour A Vassy who is preferred to Bounce Back. The last mentioned has not won since landing the Attheraces Gold cup (formerly the Whitbread) in 2002 but Martin Pipe's runners at this meeting always have to be respected and it would come as no surprise to see the eight-year-old run well. Topweight Historic has claims but Tom George's runner shave tended to need an outing to put them spot on and he is probably best watched on his reappearance. Tommy Carson comes here in good form but this looks tougher than the race that he won at Lingfield last month and a bigger threat may come from Tom's Prize, who should strip fitter for his recent return over hurdles. Uncle Mick is consistent and represents the Colin Tizzard stable that has done well at this meeting in the past but he is held by the selection on running here last month. Un Jour A Vassy had failed to complete in his last two starts prior to his success over course and distance in a similar contest but with his confidence restored the nine-year-old holds solid claims of following up off his new mark.
