Verdict

Jim Bolger and Aidan O'Brien have each won three of these in the past seven years with Michael Halford interrupting the sequence. All three have fancied runners here with the former's BANTRY BAY just getting the verdict. He attempted to make all over 1m4f on heavy ground at Leopardstown but ran out of steam in the closing stages and was beaten a short-head. Bolger saddles Brightly Shining, who wasn't far behind Hans Holbein at Leopardstown last month, while Halford's Ashoka found a mile too short on his debut at Killarney and was going on strongly at the finish. Aared wandered under pressure in the final furlong here last month and was demoted to fourth but he's a consistent type who should get competitive again. Dermot Weld's newcomer Mutazen cost $500,000 and is related to several winners so is one to note.
