In depth

Verdict

Broken Knights, who won his hurdling debut at Ayr recently, should take all the beating in this race. He came through happily to lead a furlong from home on that occasion, but carries a 7lb penalty as a result. Therefore, Henrietta Knight's Beechwood is the TEAMtalk selection. Mick Channon, his former trainer considered him a touch too slow for the Flat, but thought he would win a bumper. He finished fourth to Widemouth Bay on his racing debut at Wincanton last month, and should do better this time around. His stablemate made a winning debut in a Huntingdon bumper on Thursday, which bodes well for Beechwood's chances. Petanque hasn't run since winning his racing debut in a Huntingdon bumper last December. Andrew Tinkler claims 7lb from his 11st 11lb allocation, but the long absence is a concern. Bison King looks to have an each-way chance: this five-year-old was just beaten by a length on his debut last time out and looks capable of getting his head in front. Montemoss won a point-to-point earlier this year, but is an unknown quantity in bumpers and best watched. Sue Smith doesn't run too many horses in bumpers, but Nickel Suntoo finished just eight lengths second to Meggie's Lad at Southwell last month and must be fancied to finish in the first three. Of the others, Abbey Days finished well ahead of Loopy Linda when taking fourth place in a recent Wetherby bumper and could improve for that race. Of the newcomers, Batten Down is Jonjo O'Neill's representative, and may have a chance. A quarter of the handler's bumper runners have won this season, which is a better strike rate than the trainers of the other unraced horses here.
