In depth

Toronado followed a Newbury maiden win with victory in a Listed race at Ascot and has obvious scope for improvement. Unsinkable is also unbeaten after 6f wins at Newcastle and this track in July while Tha'Ir continues to run well. Successful in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, he was then a close-up fourth in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood and just touched off in the Solario Stakes at Sandown last time - Birdman is safely held on the form book. But the one to beat is probably DUNDONNELL, who won the Acomb Stakes at York a shade cosily in the end having briefly looked in trouble at halfway. He's a big-striding type so should take to this track and is entered in all the big two-year-old races between now and the end of the season. Maxentius looked useful when winning over 7f here in June but has finished behind Birdman in both subsequent starts and also has to reverse Goodwood running with Tha'Ir.

Birdman (IRE) 7-4fav (9-3) Raced last of the 4, struggling to get there from 2f out, ran on in 3rd without threatening 1st 2 inside final furlong, 3rd of 4, 2l behind First Cornerstone (9-3) at Curragh 7f 2yo Grp 2 (1) sft in Aug.

Dundonnell (USA) 15-8fav (9-0) Took keen hold, held up in rear, steady headway on outside over 4f out, tracking leaders travelling strongly 3f out, led 2f out, soon edged left, ridden and hung right final 135 yards, stayed on well, won at York 7f 2yo Grp 3 (1) gf in Aug beating Steeler (9-0) by 3/4l, 5 ran.

Maxentius (IRE) 8-1 (9-0) Took keen hold, tracked leading pair, pushed along 3f out, ridden and weakened inside final 2f, last of 10, 8l behind Olympic Glory (9-3) at Goodwood 7f 2yo Grp 2 (1) gd in Aug.

Tha'ir (IRE) 9-4fav (9-0) Took keen hold, held up in touch in 6th, headway on rails 3f out, chased leaders 2f out, went 2nd over 1f out, ridden to lead inside final furlong, headed and not pace of winner final strides, 2nd of 7, hd behind Fantastic Moon (9-0) at Sandown 7f 2yo Grp 3 (1) gf.
