Verdict

It seems incredible that FIRST LIEUTENANT hasn't won since beating Menorah and Silviniaco Conti in the Grade 1 Betfred Bowl at Aintree in 2013. He's run some brilliant races subsequently, including when narrowly beaten by Don Poli in the Lexus at Leopardstown in December, and this should surely be his day. It's even longer since Realt Mor was winning the Grade 1 Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse and though he's been running poorly the handicapper has given him a chance. Shanahan's Turn won the Galway Plate in July and that's likely to be his target again but Elegant Statesman won this last year and looks have been prepared for another crack, though he's 12lb higher. Kylestyle has won twice over the course and distance this year while Royal Boru was impressive over the minimum at Tramore and was travelling easily when unseating his rider at the second last over 2m3f at Listowel.
