Verdict
The Ballydoyle battalions are out in force again with Ryan Moore choosing the supplemented Sir Dragonet, the extraordinary winner of the Chester Vase, though jockey bookings don't always work out - as Wings of Eagles proved two years ago. Now a short-priced favourite for the race, the son of Camelot was obviously suited by the trip and softish ground at Chester and though a slow time tempers enthusiasm he's a colt of enormous potential. Padraig Beggy, who rode Wings of Eagles, is on board Norway but it's impossible to see his mount reversing Chester running with the winner. Donnacha would have had second pick and he's gone for Broome, who easily beat stable companion Sovereign in the Ballysax at Leopardstown then returned there for another comfortable victory in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. He'd been beaten fair and square by Madhmoon in a Group 2 on the same track in September but though Kevin Prendergast's charge would be the most popular winner here his stamina has to be in question, despite staying on best of all in the 2000 Guineas. Anthony Van Dyck improved for stepping up in trip on soft ground in the Lingfield Derby Trial but the ground may be too quick. Japan was a staying-on fourth in the Dante, he looked badly in need of the run, as the betting indicated. His pedigree is all about middle-distances so a big run is anticipated and he'd be the selection in the unlikely event of soft going but his York conqueror TELECASTER gets the nod. By a Derby winner out of an Oaks runner-up, he's bred for this and though beaten narrowly by Bangkok at Doncaster in March he's made incredible progress subsequently and can reverse form with the Sandown Classic Trial winner.
