Triple Gold Cup winner Best Mate makes his seasonal reappearance in this contest but, over a trip short of his best and with the likelihood that he will need the run, Henritta Knight's stable star is probably best left alone with preference for Mister McGoldrick, who gets the vote ahead of Kauto Star and Ashley Brook. The last mentioned won on his reappearance here last term and continued to progress throughout the season but he is likely to have other objectives this term and may not be ready for this test. Contraband had ground conditions to suit when landing the Arkle last season but may find the ground too testing for him today, while Monkerhostin probably wants further these days to show his best. Ground Ball is more than capable but seems a shade high in the weights at present, while Kadount was inconsistent in his first season over fences and may find these more experienced rivals too good form him. Kauto Star had created a favourable impression until a bad fall here in January curtailed his campaign last term and he is potentially useful. However, a watching brief is probably best advised and a safer bet at better odds could be Sue Smith's Mister McGoldrick, who may not have the class of one or two of his rivals but has gone well fresh in the past and, if he is fit for his return, could well be good enough to spring what would be a surprise victory.
