There's only 6lb between the top and bottom of this handicap and Brian Ellison will be pleased to see Newstart sneak in at the foot of the weights, though he was beaten in a Uttoxeter seller last month. Gordon Elliott has been unable to get a race out of Canny Tom, who reverts to a handicap after five placed efforts in maidens. He's 7lb higher than when last in a handicap so this looks tougher. Smadynium hasn't been running very well over fences but can race from 18lb lower over timber so should be kept on the right side along with Bashful Beauty, another on a much lower mark back over hurdles. ARTFUL ARTIST (NAP) has yet to win a race over timber but the three-times Flat winner has run some fair races in defeat and won the valuable Guinness Handicap on the level here in 2014. He'll be primed for this and Davy Russell can steer him to victory.
