        Verdict

        Woolston Ferry's experience earns him the tentative vote but the presence of some well bred newcomers mean that we must tread cautiously at this stage. The selection hails from the in-form Channon yard and knew his job at the first time of asking as he ran well over course and distance in only going down by a short-head with the pair clear of the field. His proven form and ability to handle the track are big plus points. All of the newcomers make some appeal on paper but of most interest, with one eye on the future too, are Gyr and Custody. The latter has been given a Derby entry as one might expect for one whose dam won the Oaks but he's also related to a juvenile winner over seven furlongs and must be respected. Gyr may be the better prospect for today as this Pivotal colt is a half-brother to numerous quality winners including the smart juvenile Invincible Spirit. The market will be as revealing as ever but, for the time being, Woolston Ferry is the obvious starting point.
