In depth
Verdict
The draw could have been a little kinder to Gatwick, but he has shown sufficient progression for him to be given the vote over the likes of Instructor and Cello, who are both capable of giving the selection plenty to think about if they run up to form. The same comments apply to Sew'n'so Character and Desert Dreamer, who are very closely matched on their Chester reappearance efforts, and both are worth monitoring in the betting market as things unfold. Woody Valentine is another to throw into the mix as he is very well berthed in stall 16 and hails from a yard that have an impeccable record with their runners at this course. The Woodman gelding scored in bloodless fashion on heavy ground at Pontefract and looks sure to go well if handling this firmer surface. The same comments apply to his stablemate, Never Will, whose seasonal form has a solid feel to it and he should make a bold bid in spite of his 6lb penalty today. However, he has the worst of the draw to contend with and is reluctantly passed over for that reason. In contrast, Gatwick will not need to work so hard to be on the speed from his position down the middle of the track and it not be surprising to see Richard Quinn try to get him handy at an early stage. The son of Ali Royal, whose third at Newbury looks as sound a piece of form as anything else on offer in the race, is open to bags of improvement and, considering that he has yet to finish out of the money in any of his previous starts, he will be very hard to get past here.
