          Verdict

This is one of the longest races in the calendar and can see SOM TALA put his confirmed stamina and class to good use. Mudawin is another classy contender on a decent mark and should go well with Lady Dedlock amongst others to consider. Mudawin won the Ebor in 2006 from just a 1lb higher mark but has never won beyond that distance of 14 furlongs. He has made the frame over two miles and ran his best race for a long time when seventh in the Northumberland Plate on his first start for Jim Goldie, the booking of Ryan Moore is another obvious plus but doubts about his stamina persist. For that reason, preference is for Som Tala who appeared to be given too much to do when fifth from a 7lb lower mark in last year's renewal. He has been ridden more prominently in his races since then and should be able to get a decent racing position today. This will need a career best but he appears to be in the form of his life this season and may prove up to the task. Secret Ploy struck a rare blow for the older horses last season and Downing Street is one of their brigade that could go well at this extreme trip but four and five-year-olds have dominated the race in recent years. Of the many contenders, Lady Dedlock takes our eye as Jamie Poulton has engaged one of the best lightweight jockeys around and she has run well at the track in the past. She's still a maiden on turf and has to prove herself at this extreme trip but could make the frame at a decent price. We'll be looking to the other end of the weights for the winner though and will take Som Tala to prove that he's the class act in the field.
