Verdict
Truism is respected after a fine third on Tuesday but preference is for PEPONI; last time out winners Baylini, Carlitos Spirit and Kilburn should acquit themselves well too. Peter Makin's gelding looks well drawn in 15 and ran a fair race on his handicap debut at Haydock. The 70-day absence since then has to be a slight concern but his previous maiden second to now 96-rated Suited And Booted makes this mark of 77 seems a very generous one, so with the step up in trip to suit we'll chance him. Truism was trapped in a pocket two furlongs from home when contesting a better race than this on Tuesday, so he must be considered as a horse who acts well here. He does step up a furlong in trip but that could prove a positive and providing the race doesn't come too soon he'll surely go close. Baylini is a consistent mare but this is the minimum distance for her so a bigger threat may be Kilburn, who is well drawn and looks certain to appreciate an extra furlong. Carlitos Spirit is a stone higher than when winning last time and that may anchor him while Elliptical has gone off the boil of late, so at a price Buddy Holly is of slightly more appeal. Pat Eddery's charge took second on his sole try here and his penultimate effort at Leicester suggested he can place off this mark of 80. Bencoolen and course-specialist Mujood both failed to run to form behind Truism earlier this week so Peponi remains the one for us.
