In depth

Verdict

This is not a straightforward race to try to assess but we will side with Bowness ahead of Diamond Katie, One Great Idea, Born To Be Bold, Fairy Tail and Calabaza. The selection is of great interest, being out of the high-class Dominica from a very fast family. The market will tell us more but her stable is in pretty good form and, on breeding, she ought to handle the going. Turning to the others and Match Ball made no show on his Ripon debut last July, but Diamond Katie continued on the upgrade at Newmarket last time, and she holds place claims. One Great Idea's second to Juantorena on her final start last season was a decent effort and she is afforded respect. The Jamie Osborne-trained Fairy Tail also catches the eye, and the trainer has been doing ok with his two-year-olds of late. Cutglass Gaudy has disappointed since running well at Beverley last September, but cheekpieces are tried today. Calabaza made late headway on his debut, and should improve for that, while Born To Be Bold's second to Exmoor last time was boosted by that one's fair run when second in a handicap at Nottingham yesterday. The others possibly have a bit to prove or look unlikely at the first time of asking, which returns us to the selection, which is Bowness.
