Verdict
From a shortlist of Cape Columbine, Echelon, Karen's Caper, Maids Causeway, Pennkenna Princess, Satin Kiss, Shanghai Lily, Pictavia, Saoire and Virginia Waters for the 1,000 Guineas, we will side with Echelon. The selection finished a head and a neck behind Pennkenna Princess when they were third and first, respectively, in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury last time and, much as both are respected here, we feel that Echelon may be shown in a better light on this faster going today. A well-bred filly, she was sent off as favourite for last season's Fillies' Mile but met trouble in running and ran green, otherwise she would have finished closer to the principals. She can set about building on her reputation today. Love Thirty was fourth at Newbury and again looks held. Much as Cape Columbine was beaten three-parts of a length by Karen's Caper in the Nell Gwyn Stakes last time, there is a lot to like about her physically and she looks set to get better and better as the season goes on. That said, Karen's Caper will also improve on that Newmarket effort and her chance is respected. Favourita, Slip Dance, Golden Legacy and Bahia Breeze were third, fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the Nell Gwyn and can be held again. Maids Causeway either won or was placed in some of the top two-year-old races for fillies last season, displaying both toughness and class in the process. Her lack of a run this year should not count against her and she too can go well in a bid to give her sire a Classic double following Footstepsinthesand's success yesterday. The UAE 1,000 Guineas and Oaks winner, Satin Kiss, who has improved for the application of a tongue-tie, and Sir Michael Stoute's other runner, the unbeaten-in-two Shanghai Lily, are also afforded respect. Other possibles are the Jim Bolger-trained Pictavia, who showed useful juvenile form in Ireland last season and is sure to improve for a step up in trip this time around, and the smart Saoire, who was just behind Pictavia in last season's Moyglare Stud Stakes, and just in front of Virginia Waters in the Group 3 C L Weld Stakes last season on going that would have been too soft for her. Given that Virginia Waters has returned this season with a win, they form a strong hand for the Irish in an open-looking Classic, in which, overall, we will side with Echelon.
