Verdict
Dr Faustus is preferred to Tomintoul Flyer and Rochefort. It's no easy task to give weight and a beating to a field as competitive as this but the selection has pretensions of being a good deal better than a handicapper and is taken to do just that. He was something of a talking horse as a juvenile but clearly wasn't expected to come into his own until this season or possibly even next term. He took a step in the right direction when readily accounting for Ramona Chase on his reappearance before finishing a four and a half length ninth to Collection in the Hampton Court Stakes. He's 14lbs higher than when winning but there's good reason to believe that he's better than his latest run and that he has the scope to win from his revised mark. In keeping with so many races at the Royal meeting, the race was falsely-run which favoured those to the fore of affairs and the selection was never able to get competitive from off the pace. He's by Sadler's Wells so there's every reason to believe that he'd have preferred more cut in the ground and his breeding also points to him being on a strong stayer and we confidently expect a bold show from him back on this stiffer track with the likelihood of a stronger pace. The question is whether he's good enough to concede weight to a strong field and two that we like further down the weights are Tomintoul Flyer and Rochefort and it's unlikely that we've seen the best of either. Tomintoul Flyer is another highly regarded individual who looks to be coming to himself if his win at Kempton is anything to go by; improvement's required to defy a 9lb higher mark in a better race but, if the vibes are anything to go by, he may well prove up to the task. Rochefort made a satisfactory reappearance in the Epsom handicap won by the smart Conduit; he's just the type of horse that his yard does well with and he's entitled to come on for the outing. Clearly, there are a host of dangers and Wasan is sure to have his supporters following an impressive win last time and his pedigree offers hope that he will stay this far but Lazy Days will need to have inherited plenty of stamina from his dam if he's to be staying on as strongly as some of his stoutly bred rivals. Mark Johnston's runners are respected whilst Dream Desert and Jedediah are others deemed worthy of mention from a plethora of possible candidates but DR FAUSTUS may be able to pull this one out of the hat.
