In depth

Verdict

This is virtually impossible to get a handle on with so much unexposed talent on view, but the tentative vote goes to Kalgoorlie over the likes of Old Romney, Safe Investment, Maslak and Italian Stallion to name but a few interesting newcomers. It is safe to say that the market will sift out the wheat from the chaff amongst the debutantes here, but of the five that have actually seen the racecourse so far, Kalgoorlie stands out. Jeremy Noseda'a charge stepped up on what was an educational introduction on soft ground here in May to finish fourth behind Hellvelyn in the Coventry Stakes. Switched left from a high draw at Royal Ascot, he did well to finish hot on the heels of more fancied rivals and ahead of Jo'Burg who franked the form at Windsor on Monday. With experience to call upon, he should be in at the finish. The fact that there are so many unknown quantities stops him being an obvious choice though, and with Mark Johnston's team in fine form, the well-bred Old Romney is just one danger. Related to high-class Maysoon on the dam's side, he should give a good account along with Safe Investment who can boast the likes of Commander-In-Chief and Warning in his pedigree. Ed Dunlop nominated this race as the first test for Maslak a while ago, and as Barry Hills has a fair record in this event, Zaahid has to be given a mention, as does Italian Stallion whose stable has collected this twice in the past five runnings. It is a real head-scratcher, but we shall stick with the proven Coventry form in our quest for the winner and side with Kalgoorlie.
