Verdict
Some great old characters in this contest with our vote going to Millenary over Persian Punch and Kasthari. John Dunlop's six-year-old has retained his form very well and a repeat of his win here in the Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes in July, would give him a great chance. There is nothing we can add to the career and character of Persian Punch. He's a horse to warm the blood on the coldest day, and victory for him would cap a season that has seen him win both the Goodwood and Doncaster Cups. He also won this race last year and in 2000. He's a real gem of a horse. Sir Michael Stoute's Kasthari finished ahead of Persian Punch in the Henry II Stakes in May and is now three pounds better off at the weights. Despite the fact that he has not been seen since finishing unplaced in the Ascot Gold Cup, he can go well here. One-time Derby hope Tholjanah has been disappointing overall so far but , on the upside, he is lightly raced and has a pedigree that suggest he will keep on improving with age and maturity. However, recent efforts have been modest, including when wearing a visor, which is left off today. Savannah Bay has a five-pound pull on Persian Punch for a five-length deficit based on Goodwood Cup runs but then finished a long way behind him at Doncaster next time. Danish raider Porsa System is a little hard to assess, but the chances are that he has something to find on the main contenders here. They are Millenary and Persian Punch, with our vote going to Millenary.
