In depth
Verdict
Maybeseven has failed to complete in five of his last six races but is now back to a winning mark. Tomcappagh, Frazer Island, Gare Hill and Our Jolly Swagman are the four course and distance winners in the race. The former last won in this race last year, off a mark of 72 and races from a mark of 75 today. The second-named is the topweight whose last win came in 1997 off a mark of 125 (now 98) but he is rising 14 years of age. Gare Hill is the from Josh Gifford's yard and has yet to run this year. Relatively lightly raced, he is 8lbs higher than for his last win, and was well behind Apple John at Fontwell in February over six furlongs shorter and something may have been wrong with him that day. Our Jolly Swagman has gained all four of his wins at Plumpton, the last from a mark of 90 (91 today) in January. His latest effort here was a bit flat but we are prepared to forgive him that and, given his liking for the Sussex track, gets the TEAMtalk vote. Master Club Royal is only two pounds higher than for his Sedgefield win (his first career success, same rider today) and can go well. Former Irish winner Captain Clooney was racing for the first time in 15 months when unseating at Wincanton. He appears to have some ability but does not seem the easiest ride. Apple John has won a couple of amateur events this year, the latest 13 days ago from a mark of 77 (85 today). He is now 13 and might just get found out from his higher mark. Magic Dancer is 11lbs better off with Apple John for being beaten 13 lengths by him at Hereford last time. His best form of two years ago brings him well into the reckoning but you are taking a chance that he will show it. The step up in trip far from certain to suit The Leader whose three wins have all come at Folkestone over two miles, even though he has won from his current mark and has a capable rider on board.
