Verdict
Young Bertie is interesting from the bottom but in such a tight handicap (just 9lbs separates the field) we will side with course and distance specialist MAJOR MAGPIE ahead of Hula Ballew. The winner of this race in 2006, the selection has held his form well this season but he needs luck in running because of his come-from-behind tactics. Today's jockey Darryl Holland won on the horse back in August and has now won three times from as many rides on the horse. A mark of 80 is 2lbs above his highest winning mark but a big run is expected. My Paris has the talent but doesn't always put it in; it's no surprise to see the visor tried for the first time today. Sunnyside Tom has won on any ground so it was a surprisingly poor effort from him last time; he remains capable of much better. Hartshead has been given a break since his last run and his stable were in good form earlier in the week, Young Bertie has been given three months off and has won here before, whilst Tartan Gigha is well-drawn for a front-runner if he jumps off on terms. Hula Ballew knows how to win but his current mark looks high and it is unlikely that he will find more improvement aged eight. Observatory Star showed a good attitude to win at Thirsk at the start of August but a 4lb rise may make him vulnerable and so we will stick with Major Magpie as the winner.
