In depth

A cracking little finale with in-form types clashing. Mister Chiang found his latest handicap rise too daunting the last day and is best watched in what could well prove a tactical battle with the Johnston topweight and easy Musselburgh victor, Euro Implosion, looking to run the finish out of their rivals. In contrast, both Funny Man, seeking a four-timer, and the hat-trick seeking Five Helmets have been landing the odds with a strong finishing kick. It's a tricky call but EURO IMPLOSION seemed to relish the cut in the ground last time and receives a narrow vote. Philonikia is unexposed and the one to note in the market for the Ralph Beckett team.

Mister Chiang 4-1jfav (9-2) Tracked leader 3f, handy 3rd, looking for room when badly bumped 2f out, soon 2nd and ridden, weakened inside final furlong, 5th of 10, at Brighton 1m 4f hcp (4) gf in Aug.

Funny Man 6-5fav (9-5) In rear and in touch, pushed along 6f out, headway over 3f out, ridden over 1f out, led inside final furlong, kept on well towards finish, won at Lingfield 1m 6f hcp (5) sft in Jul beating Arthur Pendragon (9-7) by 2 1/4l, 4 ran.

Five Helmets (IRE) 9-2 (8-10) Held up in last pair, steady headway on outside over 2f out, ran on inside final furlong, led near finish, won at Ayr 1m 2f hcp (4) gf in Jul beating Wild Shot (8-11) by nk, 11 ran.

Euro Implosion (IRE) 8-13fav (9-4) Made all, stayed on well, unchallenged, won at Musselburgh 1m 4f hcp (6) sft in Aug beating Dew Pond (9-8) by 4 1/2l, 7 ran.

Philonikia 9-1 (9-4) Chased leaders, pushed along over 3f out, every chance 2f out, stayed on same pace final furlong, 4th of 10, 4 1/4l behind Funny Man (9-0) at Doncaster 1m 4f hcp (5) gd in Jul.

Potenza (IRE) 13-2 (9-5) In touch in mid-division, effort over 1f out, edged left entering final furlong, went 3rd, kept on, 3rd of 9, 3 1/4l behind George Mallory (9-2) at Haydock 1m 2f hcp (5) sft in Aug.
