In depth
Verdict
The market will be informative here with plenty of interesting newcomers, however Merchant Navy looks to be starting his career over a more suitable trip than some and he gets the vote ahead of Nickel Silver and Mafioso. Ed Dunlop has a profitable record at Ripon and is one from two with his two-year-old's at the course. This alone means that Merchant Navy warrants respect but he also is starting off at a suitable trip and can score today. Mark Johnston has won this race twice in the last three years with newcomers so Mafioso must be high on anyone's shortlist, along with Prunes although the stable's youngsters often need the run. Varinia has the best form of those to have raced so far but that doesn't say a lot, so of more interest may be Bespoke Boy who's stable like a punt. Watch the market is the advice in this race, but without that information Merchant Navy gets the nod.
