In depth
Verdict
A very interesting line-up for this maiden but, with so many newcomers in the race, caution is advised. However, in making a selection, Melrose Avenue might just be the one. Looking at the field. John Gosden, who is having a very good season, saddles Jalamid here, and this well-bred son of Danehill cost 300,000 guineas so has some very good credentials. He has to be considered, as does Mark Johnston's 80,000-guinea son of Kris S, Melrose Avenue, Marcus Tregoning's Moshkil, who is related to a number of winners, Ed Dunlop's 55,000-guinea acquisition, Seyaadi, Terry Mills' South O' The border, Andrew Balding's Tuvalu and Richard Hannon's Chapter, a well-bred son of Sinndar who cost 100,000 guineas. Madam Caversfield is probably the best of those to have run, but all four to have seen the track have not exactly set it alight. Overall, this has the look of a a contest from which we will be a lot more wiser once it has been run but, given that Mark Johnston would hardly be sending his runner to Sandown unless he felt he had ability, we will select Melrose Avenue.
