Verdict
This novice contest should be between the pair Inn Antique and Middlethorpe. The former has been very consistent on the level, holding a rating in the sixties for some time, but has failed to get his nose in front on four previous starts over hurdles. Having said that, he has performed creditably in those runs and is proven on today's ground, though he has yet to prove that he truly sees out this trip to the line. Therefore, preference here goes to the top weight Inn Antique. Ferdy Murphy's gelding is well-in with Middlethorpe on official ratings at these weights. He also loves the ground, has a course and distance win to his name and comes from a yard bang in form. He can defy the welter burden and win again here. There is certainly nothing else that stands out as obvious in the way of alternatives, though Untidy Daughter has achieved a similar sort of rating to Middlethorpe on the flat and therefore has some ability, though apart from one run at Catterick we have yet to see it reproduced over hurdles. She also has to prove that she can handle this going. Uptown Lad has been handled with care in his two hurdles to date and could be one to make the frame if he can go in the mud, while another mudlark, Lord Pierce is a further one to merit consideration for place money.
