Verdict
A host of out of form sorts go to post for this closing contest which should leave the way clear for KING CANUTE, Scruffy Skip and Granakey to fight out the finish and we side with the former. A course debutant, our gelding is far from bomb-proof but he promises to act on the surface through his breeding and he's got recent winning form which few of these can boast. That came over this trip at Kempton and a 5lb higher mark shouldn't make much difference against such modest rivals so if he goes at Southwell he'll go close to winning. Scruffy Skip certainly does act here and must enter calculations despite the fact he's climbed the weights in defeat. He took third over course and distance a couple of starts back before flying at the death over six, suggesting that this return to seven will serve him well, so he should take a hand in the finish despite the handicapper's best efforts to ensure otherwise. Granakey came up against a handicap snip on his penultimate start and lost nothing in defeat afterwards having only had a day to recover, so Ian Williams' charge must have claims off this mark; he's been rated much higher in the past. Crocodile Bay is now almost a stone lower than his last winning mark and that victory was here but it's a rapidly fading memory and the horse can be opposed now with similar comments applying to Motu, so those looking for each-way value could do worse than turn to Owed, whose penultimate third showed he has it in him if consenting to put it all together. Bajan Pride represents a red-hot yard but that shouldn't enable him to score here and we'll return to King Canute in the hope that this surface isn't a hindrance.
