In depth

Verdict

An open finale, with the biggest field of the day, and we like the claims of GENERAL TUFTO, who we think can get the better of likely rivals Afton View and Betteras Bertie. The selection is chasing a hat-trick in the space of a fortnight, with the previous wins coming here, the latter one an apprentices contest so there's no penalty, and he's well in at the weights, with Holly Hall again doing the steering, and claiming seven pounds. He's the only course and distance winner in the field and the only one coming into the race in decent form. Afton View has been runner up in his last two outings, and the last run here was one of his best to date, but no wins from 26 doesn't inspire much confidence. Betteras Bertie has never been better than all, as a record of 0 from 19 shows. This is his ninth successive race here, and backers may know early on if they've got a chance as he's not always the quickest away. There are more negatives than positives about most of these, who are running at this level for a reason, but we think the best of the bunch is General Tufto.
