In depth

Verdict

Marcus Tregoning has a 50% strike rate here from his rare visits and is set to boost his tally with the lightly raced Smooth Passage. The three-year-old showed nothing in three maiden outings last term but this daughter of Suave Dancer is bred to shine over middle distances and should take plenty of beating off a mark of just 50 on her handicap debut. Similar comments apply to Tolcea, a half brother to mile and a half Pattern winner Subtle Power, but the assessor has been less kind to Ed Dunlop's charge who is forced to concede weight all round. Tom Tate's Fundamental ran encouragingly on his return last month despite being too keen in the early stages while Nightwatchman is another capable of leaving last year's form behind over a trip more in keeping with his breeding.
