In depth
Verdict
A fairly trappy finale, but Gentle Response gets a tentative selection at the expense of Lady Protector, Canosa and Mary Jane. Lady Protector finished half a length in front of Mary Jane at Newcastle in May, and is two pounds better off here. However, while she has been somewhat disappointing in her two subsequent starts, Mary Jane has been running well enough and it would be no surprise to see her reverse that form today. Canosa put up a much-improved performance when second in a maiden at Ripon last time, and while she cannot be guaranteed to run to that form here, if she did she would have a major chance. However, Gentle Response should prove to be a slightly safer selection. Chris Dwyer's filly had no chance from her poor draw at Folkestone last time, but had earlier run really well in a Bath claimer and that form, along with her close second in a Beverley handicap in June, suggest she could be good enough to go very close here.
