Verdict
Conditions are right for Ranelagh Gray to get back to winning ways, with Preston Brook and Honey's Gift others for the short list. The Venetia Williams-trained gelding loves to get his toe in and was a winner at Folkestone on bottomless ground in January before finishing runner-up off this mark at Wincanton next time. A combination of weight and quicker ground contributed to him being pulled up at Newbury last time, but we can forgive that run now he has things in his favour and with Sam Thomas's 3lb claim to help he can score. Preston Brook reverts to hurdling after an abortive attempt in hunter chases. He is 8lb higher here than when winning a heavy ground maiden hurdle at Southwell two years ago, but Mick Easterby is a shrewd customer and he could now have him spot on for a return to timber while having protected his handicap mark. He can go well, but is just overlooked. Honey's Gift is another who will be suited by the going, but he has gone up 7lb for finishing second to Mister Arjay at Fakenham last time out and does not look well treated. Few of the others make appeal, though Tiger Frog would be a place possible on his best form, but for the selection we return to Ranelagh Gray.
