Verdict
Golden Square won well enough over course and distance last month and Tony Carroll's gelding has to be respected off just a 6lb higher mark but the testing underfoot conditions may prevent him from following up and a better bet looks to be SWEET AS PYE, who gets the vote with the main danger rated as No Supper. Tim Vaughan's gelding has failed to complete in his last two starts over fences but the return to hurdles may suit as may the return to more testing conditions and he has to be respected. Nautical Approach ran well enough on the only occasion that he has encountered ground softer than good under rules when a good second to Tarkani at Worcester in October and he makes more appeal than Magic Merlin, who would prefer faster going. Jonjo O'Neill's Victory Surge has given little sign of encouragement so far and may do better on this surface but a better bet looks to be Sweet As Pye. The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained gelding has been given a chance by the handicapper having been dropped 2lbs since his most recent start when a creditable fourth behind Petroglyph at Ludlow last month and he looks worth backing on ground that suits.
