In depth
Verdict
This is a fascinating race and the market should be watched closely for any clues as to the chances of the newcomers, but River Royale has experience on his side and he may be too good for the likes of Self-Discipline and Noah Jameel. The selection improved for each of his three runs last season and his latest creditable third behind Centaurus at Newmarket looks a good benchmark for the rest here. Noah Jameel is a well-bred colt by Mark of Esteem and it would be no surprise to see him go well on his racecourse debut, although the stable's newcomers do normally need their first run. Self-Discipline is another nicely-bred colt but he may be seen to better effect over further in time, while the other Barry Hills runner Grande Roche was a little disappointing on his debut at Doncaster last season although he may do better over this extra furlong. Bonfire hails from the Mark Johnston yard but he was well-behind our selection when last seen out and we will stick with River Royale who looks the one they all have to beat.
