In depth

Verdict

Despite the large turnout, not many can be realistically fancied, and newcomer Karlani is taken to gain the day over Maneki Neko, Sea Storm and Vodkova King. Karlani was proving to be a frustrating sort on the Flat before coming good at Newcastle on what was his 15th career start. Beaten in two subsequent outings, he now has his attention turned to hurdles, and this well-bred sort, who will probably need further over timber in truth, should make his presence felt here with little to beat. Maneki Neko does boast more experience over hurdles and lines up fit from a spell on the Flat, but he always finds at least one too good, while Sea Storm, who to be fair, did not run too badly when fourth at Ayr, is now a nine-year-old. Vodkova King will eventually be placed to good effect by his astute trainer, but Karlani can prove up to the task.
